Schedule: 48/96 shift

Reports to: Fire Chief

About the Role

The Fire Captain/Paramedic serves as a key leadership position within a small combination fire department, responsible for commanding emergency incidents, providing advanced life support (ALS) care, and leading personnel both on and off the scene. This role may serve as the Incident Commander and, at times, the sole ALS provider until additional resources arrive.

A major focus of this position is training, leadership development, and maintaining operational readiness across personnel, stations, apparatus, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

·         Command emergency incidents and serve as Incident Commander when assigned

·         Provide advanced life support (ALS) care during medical emergencies

·         Lead firefighting, rescue, and EMS operations in the field

·         Supervise and train volunteer and probationary personnel

·         Develop and deliver department-wide training programs

·         Ensure readiness and maintenance of apparatus, stations, and equipment

·         Complete and review fire and EMS reports, including QA/QI reviews

·         Support fire prevention, public education, and community outreach

·         Enforce safety standards, SOPs, and operational policies

·         Participate in department planning, operations, and special events

Minimum Qualifications (Required at Hire)

·         5+ years’ experience as a Firefighter/Paramedic

·         Colorado Firefighter II certification

·         Colorado Paramedic certification

·         Hazmat Operations & Awareness

·         BLS / ACLS / PALS certifications

·         Wildland Firefighter II (S-130/190 with red card)

·         NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800

Preferred Experience

·         Company officer or leadership experience

·         Fire Instructor or Fire Officer certifications

·         Wildland and incident command experience

·         Backcountry or austere EMS experience

·         Additional certifications (Fire Inspector I, Safety Officer, Blue Card, etc.)

Work Environment

This role operates in high-risk emergency environments including firegrounds, hazardous materials incidents, confined spaces, and extreme weather conditions. It requires significant physical ability, mental resilience, and readiness to respond to emergencies at all times.

Must pass background check, drug screening, and physical exam

Must meet all applicable state and departmental certification requirements
