OPEN BURNING Various forms of open burning exists, some require an open burning permit. All present significant risk to our community if not performed properly. Wind, temperature, humidity, topography, fuel type and weather changes all effect fire behavior. "RED FLAG" days refer to times when conditions are ripe for fire to become catastrophic. In the near future Boulder County will adopt an ordinance making it illegal to burn on "RED FLAG" days, significant fines and penalties will accompany this ordinance. Many fire department man hours and apparatus time are wasted chasing smoke reports or responding to controlled burns that then become uncontrolled. Inherent with these responses are the risk with escaped fire to the community and the overuse of emergency apparatus when they are not needed. Open burning permits are required by Boulder County. The Fire District does not currently enforce additional regulations. As part of Boulder County regulations you will be required to notify Boulder County Dispatch at (303) 441-4444 prior to starting and ending each burn. At that time you would be informed if a "RED FLAG" condition exists. You are also required to notify the Fire Department prior to burning. Please include your name, telephone number, address, and size of your fire. When we receive a smoke report, we may call you. Take a portable phone with you while monitoring your fire. You must remain on site with your fire until it is completely out. This can be an all day event. At the completion of your burn turn the ashes over with a shovel and check the pile with your hand. Not doing so places you at risk for being economically responsible for all of the damage and fire fighting efforts that an escaped fire can cause. Please refer to the following link for a permit: |
